View from Inside
Mirrored acrylic, rhinestones, brass, silver, lacquer 4 x 6 feet.
Mirror is opulent. It adorns as it catches the light and reflects its surroundings. View from Inside exploits this surface so that the viewer—and the space—become integral components of the work. Designed to mimic a large picture window, View from Inside bridges the natural world with the human-made world. Rather than being able to look out, the piece reflects its surroundings within in an “image” of a garden in relief. The reciprocal relationship between artwork and viewer activates the sculpture as much as it does the space, playing with expectations of visual language and conceptions of what is inside and what is outside, what is public and what is private, and what is flat and what is three-dimensional.
This artwork was originally commissioned by and made possible with the generous support of the Albany International Airport. It was on view in the exhibition Knockout Gorgeous. All photos by Beth Mikalonis, courtesy of the Albany International Airport.
